This foundation course is designed primarily for students from a migrant and refugee background who have limited English and who may not have literacy skills in their first language
This course is an absolute beginner course from a migrant or refugee background to support both language development in a social context and the settlement process of newly arrived students who have little English. It is a fee free course for eligible Tasmanian residents.
In this course, students will learn how to read and write the alphabet, have very short conversations, read and write a limited range of words and very simple texts as well as develop basic settlement vocabulary.
Learning will be based around ‘settlement themes’ to help students develop and understanding about things like health, housing, family and relationships, numeracy, the Australian community, government system, and work readiness.
While most classes take place on-campus, excursion s into the local community are used to provide practical experiences in which students can practice English and develop knowledge of, and confidence in, their new environment.
In this course students will undertake different types of learning including role plays, class discussions, and hands-on activities, as well as using audio-visual resources, technology and some games to practice their English.
Note: This course is fully subsidised for permanent residents from a non-English speaking background. You may be eligible for the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).
