Learn to use a range of art making materials and techniques like a professional visual artist.

This entry-level qualification is an excellent place to begin or re-start a visual art practice.

This is a full-time course designed for independent learners who want flexible online access to tuition in a range of fundamental skills and knowledge applicable to producing simple drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures.

Learn to use colour in your artworks effectively and unlock the power of your smart device camera to support a creative visual art practice.

Learn how to use a visual journal as an integral part of a creative visual art practice. Acquire introductory knowledge in art history and theory to inform your visual art practice and develop a professional creative process for both 2D and 3D projects. Learn best studio practices to keep yourself and others safe.

Creative project prompts are designed to give you the opportunity to practically apply your growing art making skills and knowledge to receive professional and constructive feedback from our inspired teaching team. These are organised into 4 course modules and at the end of each one you will prepare a portfolio of creative work and responses to set questions to submit for assessment, working towards completing the qualification by the end of the course.

This 23-week online course is supported by a weekly webinar. You can attend the webinar live or access the recorded version at a time more convenient for your busy schedule. The learning content is accessed through our online learning management application, CANVAS. It is recommended the course is accessed using a tablet, laptop or desktop device rather than a smartphone only.

Over the course of your study, you will be introduced to a range of options in materials and tools to use with an emphasis on economic and environmental sustainability.

On successful completion of this course, you will have a range of visual arts skills and the ability to select, adapt and transfer those skills to different situations. You will be equipped to seek employment in a range of roles including Art Studio Assistant, Gallery Assistant or Retail Assistant in an arts or craft outlet, or even establish your own business as a visual artist.

You may even choose to continue your studies at TasTAFE by going on to undertake CUA41315 – Certificate IV in Visual Arts and further build on your visual arts skills and knowledge.
