Develop the skills and knowledge you need to excel in the Screen and Media industry.

This qualification is designed to develop your skills and knowledge base across a wide variety of contexts in the Film, Television, Web video content and Digital Media industries.

This nationally recognised course is offered on a full-time basis and is delivered through structured classes, tutorials and workshops, as well as providing time for you to work independently on specific projects.

In this course, you will develop your skills across a number of areas including audio and sound, directing, writing, producing and cinematography, as well as the opportunity to build upon your leadership, management and business skills.

You’ll get hands-on experience in how to set up and use professional digital cameras, as well as gain an introduction to sound recording and editing, video editing and lighting, as well as gain experience in the different elements of planning and production, and writing screenplays, short documents and how to pitch a (good) idea!

Throughout the course, you will also get the chance to investigate micro business opportunities and articulate, present and debate ideas resulting in skills that can be applied to employment opportunities in film or broadcast media and other related disciplines.

On successful completion of this course, you will be well equipped to seek employment as an assistant in areas such as scriptwriting, video content production, technical engineering or lighting and editing.

Fees, payments and other costs

Your tuition fees cover the basic materials needed for your course, but may not cover items such as text books, workbooks, uniform, online learning resources or personal protective clothing. Depending on your course, there may also be other expenses that you need to budget for.

For courses undertaken in 12 months or less, you will be invoiced the full course fee (including any other essential fees associated with your course).

*For courses studied over multiple years, your course and other fees will be split over the years of study, with the concession fee being charged on a yearly basis. At the time of enrolment you will be invoiced for the first year’s fees. An invoice will be raised in each subsequent year around the same time as your ‘enrolment anniversary’.

Assessment methods

Assessments are designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge you learn in your course and are an essential part of your training. Assessments allow us to confirm that you can perform tasks to the standard required in the workplace, and that you can meet all of the requirements of your course.

While studying at TasTAFE, you may be assessed in a number of different ways. Some common assessment methods include:

completing workplace documents
observations on the job and/or in a simulated assessment environment
quizzes/multiple choice tests
research projects
tests – written or practical
verbal questioning
work samples
written assignments or short answers.

Desirable skills & attributes

The following skills and attributes will be useful to students studying this course:

Basic literacy and numeracy skills
Ability to use word processing software
Ability to use video and audio editing software
Some experience with video story telling
Demonstrated passion for wanting to enter the Screen Industry
Positive attitude towards learning

What you will need

There are different requirements depending on the course you are enrolled in.

Generally, it is recommended that you have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection and up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. TasTAFE has computers available for student use during normal business hours, at all major campuses.

For classes, please be prepared with standard items such as: pens, notebook or paper, USB.

You may also need to bring specific equipment, tools or personal protective equipment, your teacher will let you know.

For this course, you will need:

SD memory card “Sandisk” 64 gig capacity or greater 95Mb/sec speed for video acquisition (approx. $65.00)
SD memory card 8 gig capacity class 10 for audio recording (approx. $15.00)
Portable Hard Drive at least 1 terabyte capacity for backup and projects (approx. $70.00)
Pens, pencil and writing pad to take notes
A couple of USB sticks for quick transfer of files
Although students have full access to the Adobe Creative Suite, which includes video and audio editing software, on campus, it can be beneficial to acquire the software on their own computers. Student prices are accessible when enrolled.

On successful completion of this course you will receive a CUA41220 - Certificate IV in Screen and Media.
