TasTAFE offers the English Language Program – General to English as an Additional Language (EAL) students seeking to improve their English language competency for personal and professional reasons.

This course will develop general English language and communication skills, enabling students to operate more effectively in everyday situations, including social, study and work contexts. The program provides valuable interactive practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. It seeks to build sound knowledge of the English language through focusing on grammar, language usage and vocabulary. These skills and knowledge are integrated in the learning activities provided, including role-plays, small group discussions, spoken presentations and essay writing. Our experienced teachers ensure that individual needs are taken into account in the design of these activities.

On successful completion of the English Language Program – General, students will be able to communicate more confidently with a range of English language speakers, including native speakers and other EAL speakers, in a variety of situations.

TasTAFE inhouse English Placement Test: Duolingo English Test (DET) .

The ELICOS team recommend the Duolingo English Test as the most suitable product that covers all communicative skills while meeting stringent security features to deter fraudulent behaviour. International admissions will administer DET and refer results to the ELICOS Academic Manager for final review.

Fees, Payments and Other Costs

International course fees vary depending on the course selected for enrolment. All fees are listed in the TasTAFE International Programs Course Guide.

In addition to the tuition fee, all international courses at TasTAFE will incur an administration fee when enrolling.

TasTAFE can offer a payment plan for international students, which is structured on a per-semester basis. Detailed information regarding the payment plans are outlined in the Letter of Offer. Alternatively, you may consult with your education agent for further details.

Recognition of prior learning and skills

It makes sense that you should be recognised for the things you already know how to do.

TasTAFE can assess your skills and knowledge based on your previous education, work history or life experience – which may help you to gain your qualification a whole lot faster!

What you will need

There are different requirements depending on the course you are enrolled in.

Generally, it is recommended that you have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection and up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. TasTAFE has computers available for student use during normal business hours, at all major campuses.

For classes, please be prepared with standard items such as: pens, notebook or paper, USB.

You may also need to bring specific equipment, tools or personal protective equipment, your teacher will let you know.

Assessment methods

Assessments are designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge you learn in your course and are an essential part of your training. Assessments allow us to confirm that you can perform tasks to the standard required in the workplace, and that you can meet all of the requirements of your course.

While studying at TasTAFE, you may be assessed in a number of different ways. Some common assessment methods include:

completing workplace documents
observations on the job and/or in a simulated assessment environment
quizzes/multiple choice tests
research projects
tests – written or practical
verbal questioning
work samples
written assignments or short answers.
