Kick-start your career in the construction industry with this nationally recognised course and gain the foundation skills employers are looking for!
Gain practical experience and knowledge in the growing construction industry with this 11-week entry-level course with a focus on carpentry, bricklaying and block laying or plastering. Whether you are a school leaver or a mature-aged person looking for a career change, this course will help you develop an understanding of construction trade skills and principles, as well as expose you to common scenarios you would face on a building site.
This course has two focus areas of study – carpentry and brick laying and block laying including plastering. You can complete one of the following focus areas:
Carpentry
In this focus area, our experienced teachers will teach you how apply basic levelling procedures as well as how to use carpentry hand tools, power tools, and pneumatic tools and equipment. You’ll learn how to plan, organise work and carry out a range of measurements and calculations, and read and interpret plans and specifications.
Bricklaying and plastering
During this focus you will learn about handling and preparing bricklaying, block laying and plastering materials, as well as the use of the relevant tools and equipment. You will also gain foundational skills in preparing surfaces for plastering, work with plaster and plastersheets as well as completing a unit in carrying out basic demolition.
Completing either focus areas will give you the opportunity to undertake a basic construction project using basic tools, equipment and materials!
In the construction industry, safety is critical. This course will also provide you with the knowledge you need to work safely and sustainably in construction, as well as how to apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures. You will also learn how to work safely at heights, plus how to manually handle and store carpentry materials.
Gain an advantage over your peers and increase your employment prospects as a potential apprentice or a trades assistant with the foundation skills and knowledge that every tradesperson hopes for!
Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the skills you need to provide a range of support tasks applicable to construction work sites right around Australia. This course is excellent preparation for gaining an apprenticeship in the construction industry.
