TasTAFE recently co-designed a program to give 12 King Island District High School students a crash course in tourism and hospitality.
The students spent five days in North and North-West Tasmania getting first-hand experience at hotel, restaurant, and retail settings.
With requirements provided by the King Island industry and community, the program was designed for students to experience some of the best tourism and hospitality that the regions have to offer. It was designed to give students the opportunity to:
- Take part in a range of leading hospitality and tourism experiences.
- Learn about visitor experience from award-winning hospitality operators.
- Build employability for a tourism and hospitality career by learning various in-demand, industry endorsed skills.
Upon hitting the mainland, their first stop was at Ashgrove Cheese in Elizabeth Town. where they watched cheesemakers in action and followed their process from start to finish. They also toured the facility and enjoyed a complimentary cheese tasting.
At Rupert & Hound, they learned from the culinary team about how their product is guided by local fisherman and Tasmania’s seasons to showcase the state’s best produce, with an emphasis on minimal waste and maximum flavour.
Students also spent time at our Alanvale Campus, Freer Farm and Drysdale Launceston where got to learn all about the hospitality opportunities available at TasTAFE. They participated in short courses in Espresso Essentials, Introduction to Hospitality Essentials, Introduction to Service Essentials and Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA).
