If you have not been able to meet the entry criteria for a course you want to do, or just need some extra skills, enrolling in one of our vocational preparation programs may be a good option for you.
These courses suit a wide range of student needs and can help you to improve your basic literacy, numeracy, study, computer or work skills, prepare for a vocational pathway, return to study, overcome a learning barrier or upgrade your existing skills.

These courses are designed to help you explore your career options, and give you the skills you need to enter employment or further training.
Our work and training programs are particularly suitable if you have previously experienced barriers in your learning or employment journey, or if you have not met the entry criteria for a particular course.
The emphasis in these courses is on investigating career pathways and helping you to gain a better understanding of the work-related skills, knowledge and attitudes you’ll need in the modern day workplace.
Work pathways courses are suitable for students who have completed Year 12 and identify as having a disability or additional learning needs.
These courses will help you to develop the skills and knowledge you need to seek employment, and gain and keep a job, and deliver training in basic employability skills – which are the sorts of skills that can be used in any job and/or in the community setting.
The social and personal skills you gain throughout these courses can be adapted to home, work and community situations.
A variety of reading, writing, maths and computing courses are offered at TasTAFE campuses – and some Libraries Tasmania sites – for learners of all ages.
These include free courses that aim to improve your reading, writing and computer skills, develop your confidence, and provide a foundation from which you can continue on to other higher level courses and qualifications. Find out more about the literacy and numeracy courses on offer.
Foundation Skills Services are also available at TasTAFE for students undertaking vocational courses, including apprentices and trainees. Find out more about what Foundation Skills Services are available.
