Tutors assist migrant students to learn speaking, reading and writing English, as well as establish important connections with the local community.
After completing their training, volunteer tutors assist migrant students on a one-on-one basis for around an hour each week. Sessions are usually held at a community location such as a library or in students’ homes. Many of the migrant students live in Hobart’s Northern suburbs, but also in other locations around Hobart.

You don’t have to have a teaching background to be a volunteer tutor, just time and a passion for helping others. To become a tutor, you’ll need to complete the free Volunteer Tutor Training Program run by TasTAFE. The training is about 15 hours in total, delivered through a combination of online study and face to face sessions.
Our tutor training covers all the information you need to become a tutor and we also provide ongoing professional development.
The course consists of self-paced online study and three face-to-face meetings at TasTAFE. You will spend a total of approximately ten hours studying online, plus a total of five to six hours attending the three face-to-face meetings. During the face to face sessions, you will have opportunities to interact with existing migrant students.
